It all started in the mid 1970s with a part-time subcontract. We spun thousands of pieces of one part for a company in their factory, using our equipment and labour. That lasted about 10 years, with my father, Paul Vella, running the enterprise.
Then in 1981 the factory where my father worked full time announced it was shutting down. Paul had the opportunity to move to the main plant, but declined the offer. Instead he decided to semi retire keeping his subcontract work. I was young, full of energy, ambitious, and ready to take on the world at the ripe old age of 17. Still in high school, and with nothing to lose, I convinced my father that this was our opportunity to start a business. So we did just that.
My father and I started a small spinning shop, buying spinning equipment from my father’s former employer (Supreme Aluminum). With a simple business plan, and a small 2300 square foot rented industrial unit on Norfinch Drive we began.
Our first job was for Supreme Aluminum, my father’s former employer. Those first years were a little slow with me still in high school. We brought our subcontract job to our new location, and picked up a few small jobs here and there. We sold some of our own products to some hardware stores around town. Then I graduated from high school in 1983 and dedicated all my energies to Crown, focusing on sales.
Then we won a big contract with Noma Lighting. Our sales to that point were no more than $50,000.00, the Noma job was worth an additional $150,000.00 for that year alone. The work would continue for the next 20 years. Not bad for a kid fresh out of high school. |
|
Noma must have thought themselves as crazy for giving us the contract. There I was, this 19 year old kid fresh out of school and they were giving me the contract to a very important component of theirs. |

I believe that they were having so much trouble with there current supplier that they had nothing to loose with us. Plus our quality and service was so far superior to what they were getting from there old supplier that they had no choice but to go with us. We continued to grow our custom work and expand our line of cookware and bakeware products to become one of the leading suppliers in this area. Our pizza pan line became one of the best in the country, and today we are a leader in this industry. Our quality and efficiency in aluminum spinning is matched by none, and we remain top of our class in this industry. |
