What Is Metal Spinning? Metal spinning is a way of forming metal into round shapes. The spinning process involves using a tool, (referred to as a spinning chuck or form). This spinning chuck is the inside shape of the part you need to make. The spinning chuck is secured onto a spinning lathe where a metal circle is clamped against its bottom. The part starts spinning at a predetermined speed, then a roller or hand tool is used to form the metal onto the chuck. Spinning can be done on manual or automated machinery depending on the quantity required. Tooling is relatively inexpensive, starting at $250.00 for small parts. Spinning offers the luxury of producing parts for development or for production runs of any size with minimal upfront capital costs. Items with a tapered or radius shape are more cost effective to produce by spinning than by deep drawing.
